Stephan Costa studied jazz piano and composition/arrangement with Harald Neuwirth, Helmuth Iberer, Dejan Pecenko and Christoph Cech at the Music University Graz and at the Anton Bruckner Private University in Linz.

Since the age of 16 he has been dealing with the topic of jazz improvisation. He performes solo and with  big band as well as master classes with Ellis Marsalis, Ray Anderson, Franco d´Andrea and Joey Calderazzo, he has long experience in a wide variety of orchestras.

As head of the Innsbruck Jazz Department he worked with international musicians such as Bob Mintzer, Randy Brecker, Maria Schneider, Ray Anderson, Ernie Watts, Nils Landgren and Wolfgang Mitterer. He played live and made CD productions with various bands such as the Erben, New Bop Quartet and Stephan Costa Trio and performed with the Tirol Jazz Orchestra at home and abroad. He also works as a composer, musical director or pianist.

Stephan Costa is the head of the Jazz and Improvised Music Department at the Tyrolean State Conservatory since 1991 and is a lecturer for jazz and pop music at the Mozarteum University Innsbruck.
