Michael Tomasi was born in Vienna in 1958 and studied cello with Wilfried Tachezi at the Mozarteum University Salzburg. After completing his diploma in 1981, he studied with Helmut Schiff in Basel. From 1982 to 1993 he was a cellist at the Camerata Academica Salzburg. Since 1993 he has been a solo cellist with the Tyrolean Symphony Orchestra Innsbruck. He has been a cello teacher at the Mozarteum University Salzburg since 1983.
