Michael Mautner,

Michael Mautner was born in Salzburg in 1959 and studied musicology and philosophy at the University of Salzburg as well as composition at the Mozarteum University Salzburg with Gerhard Wimberger and conducting with Bernhard Conz, Mladen Baŝić and Michael Gielen. He took summer courses and master classes with Witold Lutoslawski, Henri Duttilleux and H. W. Henze.

From 1980 to 1984 he was the musical director of the Elisabethbühne. In the following years he worked as a freelance composer and conductor in Paris and in 1988 as a repetitor at the Salzburg Festival and at the Salzburger Landestheater. He worked as a guest conductor at the Syracuse Opera Company and as a music editor at Tele-M TV Vienna. Since 2002 he has been a composer, a musical dramaturge and a musical director at the Rabenhof Theater in Vienna and since 2005 he has been a scientific editor at the Hermann publishing group for the editions "Critical New Edition of Stage Works" and "Il Barocco italiano". Michael Mautner works as a music curator at the Galerie Konzert Wien and has been teaching at the Mozarteum University Salzburg since 2015 (pre-college and "applied music").   

Works of all genres were composed by Michael Mautner - including operas, operettas, symphonic music, chamber music - with a special affinity for musical theater. He worked for stage and film, led and initiated the multimedia music theater project COM. and has given concerts at international festivals (including Aix-en-Provence, Salzburg Festival, Styrian Autumn, Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, Vienna Festival, Vienna Modern, Bregenz Festival).   

Mautner received numerous awards and prizes for his work (e.g. Silver Bear at the Festival in Berlin in the category youth film/music for the feature film "Tunnelkind" 1990, 1st prize at the Mozart composition competition of the City of Vienna/Austro Mechana 1991). He conducted numerous own and foreign premieres of orchestral works and ensemble pieces. Concert and opera performances have taken him across Europe and the USA.   

As an author Mautner works for magazines such as "Die Presse", "Falter", "Die Furche" and others. In addition, he writes articles for various art catalogs as well as articles for various scientific publications. He was the co-author of the stage version of "State Operetta - the Austrotragödie" after Novotny/Zykan. 

Michael Mautner lives and works in Vienna and Salzburg.
