Instrumental & Vocal Pedagogy (IGP) Innsbruck

The aim of the study programme is to differentiate artistic, pedagogical and scientific competences for teaching music in various forms, especially in music schools, in cooperation with general education schools, in freelance work, but also at universities, colleges and other post-secondary educational institutions.

The Master's degree programme also serves to develop one's own profile in an individual artistic, pedagogical, scientific or practical area. Therefore, in addition to musical competences in the respective central artistic subject (Salzburg) or in the field of artistic practice (Innsbruck) and pedagogical competences, further practical, mediating, scientific and theoretical competences are to be acquired, developed and perfected during the study programme.

The following competences and knowledge are to be deepened and perfected in particular:

• Musical or instrumental/vocal skills and knowledge, especially in relation to the respective Central Artistic Subject (ZKF) according to the student's own artistic profile.
• Pedagogical knowledge and competences, especially in relation to the student's own central artistic subject (CCF) or the respective profile, but also in relation to the respective specialisation (compulsory elective subject) (study location Salzburg)
• communicative and social interaction with learners of all ages
• to participate in musical ensembles of different styles and to lead and organise them
• to master different stylistic periods of music and to be able to present them professionally at the highest level
• be able to reflect on and present one's own artistic and pedagogical actions on the basis of current scientific knowledge,
• be able to plan, carry out and evaluate one's own future professional activities
• be able to deal critically with artistic, pedagogical, music-theoretical and scientific questions and, building on this, be able to conduct independent scientific and artistic-scientific research
• be able to plan and carry out their own projects

The Master's programme Instrumental & Vocal Pedagogy (Making Music in Diversity Contexts) is divided into the following artistic, pedagogical and scientific module groups:

• Central Artistic Subject (ZKF) Ensemble
• Artistic-pedagogical profile
• Chamber music/ensemble
• Scientific and pedagogical subjects
• Free electives
• Project module/Master's thesis

The Master's examination (= the Master's degree) consists of the positive completion of the courses and examinations of all modules, the writing of a Master's thesis as well as the examinations before the board.  The commission examinations include the artistic examination in the ZKF Ensemble and the project presentation of the module Project Module/Master's Thesis.

Admission requirements

Admission to the Master's programme requires the completion of a relevant Bachelor's programme or another equivalent programme at a recognised domestic or foreign post-secondary educational institution. 

For internal and external applicants, admission to the respective Master's programme is only possible after fulfilling the admission requirements and according to the available study places.

In addition, the applicants have to prove their artistic and pedagogical potential to master the respective Master's programme within the framework of an admission examination. 

In any case, the Bachelor's degree in Instrumental & Vocal Pedagogy with the same central artistic subject at the Mozarteum University is considered to be an eligible study programme for the Master's degree in Instrumental & Vocal Pedagogy. If the equivalence is basically given and only individual supplements to the full equivalence are missing, the Rectorate is entitled to combine the determination of equivalence with the requirement of performance certificates, which have to be taken within the first two semesters of the respective Master's programme.

Registration for the admission examination

Registration for the admission examination takes place via the registration portal for applicants.

Registration may only take place at one study location, Salzburg or Innsbruck. Double registration at both study locations is not permitted and will be cancelled.

Necessary documents for online registration

• Curriculum vitae in tabular form with photo
• Bachelor's degree certificate (or degree certificate of an equivalent IGP programme)
• Official confirmation of the main subject/instrument, if this is not evident from the other documents (e.g. "Bachelor of Music" is not sufficient!)
• (final) certificates as well as examinations and transcripts of records of all artistic and/or pedagogical previous studies
• Proof of German language proficiency, if applicable

• The documents can be uploaded as PDF files in the application form.
• If the documents mentioned are not available in German or English, an official translation must be submitted.
