The planned duration of the Master's degree programme in Secondary Education (General Education) is 4 semesters. Basically, two teaching subjects have to be chosen, which are supplemented by general educational science basics, free elective subjects as well as integrated pedagogical-practical studies. The subject Fine Arts Education can be combined with any other subject.
The teacher employment law stipulates that young teachers must complete a Master's degree within five years of their Bachelor's degree in order to be able to enter into permanent employment. In addition, students have to go through a one-year induction phase in which they teach regularly and are accompanied by mentors. This professional practice can be completed directly after the Bachelor's programme and recognised as an internship in the Master's programme in accordance with the respective curricular requirements and the currently applicable legal situation (University Act and Higher Education Act).
The Master's degree programme in Secondary Education (General Education) entitles the holder to full employment as a teacher for the 5th to 13th school level at:
In addition, the interlocking of the pedagogical with the artistic-practical and scientific orientation enables a number of professional careers. In the close interaction of the different subject areas, knowledge and skills can be acquired in the course of the degree programme, especially in the area of tension between theory and practice. These are of interest for many professional fields, insofar as they aim to develop one's own artistic, research and mediating practice.
The teacher training programme at secondary level (general education) is carried out in cooperation with the following partner institutions (Entwicklungsverbund Cluster West):
In the master's program, the knowledge and skills acquired in the bachelor's program are expanded and deepened. Graduates are able to solve problems of teaching in secondary schools innovatively and creatively. They are able to deal with scientific or artistic topics independently and adequately in terms of content and methodology. They are able to participate in the subject discourse, independently acquire further subject-specific, subject-didactic and pedagogical knowledge and implement it in their teaching activities.
The Master's program in Secondary Education (General Education) comprises 120 ECTS credits (ECTS-AP). From the "Educational Science Fundamentals", modules amounting to 20 ECTS-AP and in each teaching subject and specialization modules amounting to 25 ECTS-AP have to be completed. Of these, at least 5 ECTS-AP are assigned to the respective subject didactics in each teaching subject. The 120 ECTS-AP include 6.5 ECTS-AP of pedagogical-practical study components.
The module "Conception of the Master's Thesis" comprises 5 ECTS-AP, the Master's Thesis 22.5 ECTS-AP and the defense of the Master's Thesis 2.5 ECTS-AP. In the module "Interdisciplinary Competences" 20 ECTS-AP have to be completed.
The prerequisite for admission to the master's program in secondary education (general education) is the completion of the relevant bachelor's program in general education in the development network "Cluster West" or another relevant bachelor's program or another equivalent program at a recognized Austrian or foreign post-secondary educational institution.
Should the equivalence in principle be given and only individual supplements to the full equivalence are missing, the competent body of the admitting university is entitled to prescribe additional certificates of achievement in order to achieve full equivalence, which are to be provided in the course of the Master's program.
Admission requires the passing of an admission examination to determine artistic aptitude, which must be passed by all applicants who have not completed their bachelor's degree in the Development Association Cluster West.
For applicants whose first language is not German, proof of German language skills at the B2 level must also be provided.
The subject Fine Arts Education must be combined with a second subject. An overview of the possible subjects can be found on the Cluster West website .
The combination with the teaching subject Technical and Textile Work is possible. The second subject is then studied at the PH Tirol. Information on the associated artistic admission exam can be found HERE.
