Striving for artistic perfection: the Lied course for singers and pianists prepares students for performance at the highest international level, deepening their musical and interpretative skills and their range of repertoire. The course serves as essential preparation for (among other things) important international competitions and offers performance opportunities within and outside Salzburg.

General information

The course includes 2 academic hours per week of instruction in the principal study. In addition, electives and free electives can be taken. Performance opportunities at university concerts and events in Salzburg and further afield are part of the course.

The duration of the course is 2 semesters. With the approval of the principal study teacher and the Director of Studies, it is possible to extend the course by one or two semesters.

Successful completion of the course is based upon passing grades in classes relating to the principal study. A certificate of completion can be issued upon request.

The following preliminary studies are relevant for admission to this postgraduate university course:

  • for singers: MA Voice, MA Lied, MA Opera and Music Theatre
  • for pianists: MA piano, MA applied piano studies, MA piano duo, MA accompaniment for music theatre, MA piano chamber music and Lied interpretation

The curriculum provides an overview of the courses offered. In addition to the lessons in the principal subject, (free) elective subjects can be taken. These are listed in the semester plan under “no semester recommended”.

Admission with a teaching degree, such as music education or instrumental & vocal pedagogy, is NOT possible.

A prerequisite for admission to this university course is also the successful completion of an audition. A pre-selection of applicants will be made by the audition panel based on the videos submitted.

The following extract from the examination programme PGL Lied is to be uploaded on a video platform of the applicant's choice:

  • three art songs by three composers, at least one of them in German

Important information on video uploads can be found HERE, as well as the data protection information. Applicants are kindly requested to observe the guidelines given here!

The postgraduate university programme Lied is open to singers AND pianists. It is possible to apply individually, so it is not necessary to register as an existing duo. The audition requirements are set individually for voice and piano.

Invitations to participate in an on-site audition will be issued to those who have successfully passed the preselection (video application) round.

A programme containing at least sixteen songs from three different styles/periods, eight of which must be in German and two in French, must be submitted. Singers must perform from memory.

Candidates will perform a piece of their own choice, with the audition panel selecting a further piece if necessary.

For pianists: candidates are requested to bring their own singers. If this is not possible, a singer will be provided after timely notification and consultation.
