Takanari Koyama began his studies at the University of Arts Aichi with Hideki Hoshi and studied with Josef Niederhammer and with Werner Fleischmann at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna and with Alberto Bocini at the Scuola di Musica di Fiesole. He was a double bass player in the Orchestra Academy of the ORF Radio Symphony Orchestra Vienna and a substitute with the Vienna Symphony Orchestra.

In addition, he received musical impulses from Jerzy Dybał, Josef Gilgenreiner, Bogusław Furtok, Dorin Marc, Rinat Ibragimov, Sorin Orcinschi and Wolfgang Güttler. Since 2013, he has been principal double bass with the Göttingen Symphony Orchestra, which was awarded the Echo Classic Prize in Hamburg in 2017. He has also played as principal double bass with the O/Modernt Chamber Orchestra, Beethoven Orchestra Bonn, Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg, Philharmonic Orchestra Giessen, Royal Northern Sinfonia and since 2022 he has been a regular guest principal double bass in Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in London.

Since 2017 Takanari Koyama teaches as a lecturer at the University Mozarteum Salzburg.
