About the Institute
The Institute of Basic Research on Music, founded in 1972, was
formed in order to integrate the musical, theoretical and psychoacoustical
research of bases as a scientific foundament into the education
at the Hochschule "Mozarteum".
In the course of time, the following focal points of research
arose:
- Structure of tonal systems of European and Extraeuropean Music
in History from the past to the present;
- Fine-Degree Perception of Intervals in Occidental Music;
- Intonation on Wood and Brass Wind Instruments;
- Structure and Perception of Time in Music;
- Experiments for the development of a new harmony making systematical
use of ecmelic ton degrees, i. e. tone degrees located out of
the common hearing experience of the occidental hearer.
Out of regard to the great achievements of one of its founding
members relating to the development of this research at the Hochschule
"Mozarteum", the institute was renamed in the year of
1989: "RICHTER HERF-INSTITUT FÜR MUSIKALISCHE GRUNDLAGENFORSCHUNG"
(RICHTER HERF-INSTITUTE OF BASIC RESEARCH ON MUSIC).
Since then, the researching areas have been extended by including
computer-aided data processing and especially the varios coherences
and interactions between biological processes and musical experiences
and attitude.
In cooperation with IBM and the german software-company
Visual Data a multidimensional information system on Mozart
which documents the artistic life of the composer through his
stageworks has been developed. It forms the prototype for an "Encyclopedia
of the Future", which simultaneously permits the access of
text, image and tone documents, thereby allowing the user to go
well beyond the posibilities of printed media to recall stored
musical examples.
Since the beginning of the year 1993 the RICHTER HERF-INSTITUTE
OF BASIC RESEARCH ON MUSIC has participated in an international
research project concerned with the subject Time, Brain and
Music. Music as an highly developed art of shaping the course
of time offers to the investigation a lot of points of departure
in order to reach a better understanding of the time-depending
information-processing in our brain. Within the scope of musical
shaping, the control of tempo acquires a substantial importance.
It depends upon certain brain structures and their functions,
which not only are responsible for our musical sense, but also
for the complete time-structuring of our experience and behaviour.
