POSTGRADUATE UNIVERSITY COURSE IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE
ADVANCED STUDIES IN MUSIC AND DANCE EDUCATION - ORFF-SCHULWERK

The impact of Carl Orff's ideas has influenced music and dance education in
many parts of the world. The educational principles of his and Gunild Keetman's
Schulwerk are universal and based on his belief in the creative and artistic
nature of mankind. The Orff Institute of the University Mozarteum in Salzburg,
Austria is the center of this international movement in music and dance education.
The university course addresses pedagogues from all over the world who have
already had training or experience in music and dance education based on the
pedagogical concepts of Orff Schulwerk.
It offers experienced music and dance teachers, an intensive and concentrated
setting in one of the world's most well-known integrative methods in music and
dance pedagogy based and continuing on the historical Orff Schulwerk that has
been further developed and realized according to contemporary aesthetic education.
The participants, coming from different cultural backgrounds, will be encouraged
to transfer and adapt this pedagogy to the specific needs for their own cultures.
Requirements and Target Groups
This university course addresses pedagogues from all over the world who have
already had training or experience in music and dance education based on the
pedagogical concepts of Orff Schulwerk. In spite of the fact that there are
levels courses in this area in many countries at universities, colleges, conservatories
and private pedagogical institutions, there is an international interest to
complete a course at the Orff Institute that presents this pedagogy in an authentic,
open and directional form. Postgraduate courses in English have been offered
regularly at the Orff institute since 1969.
Objectives
The course offers experienced music and dance teachers an intensive and concentrated
setting in one of the world's most well-known integrative methods in music and
dance pedagogy based and continuing on the historical Orff Schulwerk. It has
been further developed and realized according to contemporary aesthetic education.
The participants, coming from different cultural backgrounds, will be encouraged
to transfer and adapt this pedagogy to the specific needs for their own cultures.
Length and Structure of the University Course
The course incorporates two semesters. Studies begin in October and end in the
coming June of the same academic year. The course contains, within its framework
of financial possibilities.
According to the number of participants, required subjects of about 14-22 weekly
hours as well as optional elected subjects of about 2-8 hours per week.
Entrance Requirements
- A completed course of study in music and/or dance pedagogy at an undergraduate
level in a home or foreign institution, an equivalent study, or documents proving
similar qualifications
- Proof of teaching experience in the area of music and dance pedagogy
for a period of at least three years
- Proof of knowledge of the English language both orally and on paper.
The director of the course of study will make the final decision about having
fulfilled the requirements. Participation is further dependent on the payment
of tuition fees according to legal requirements. (HTG/72 § 5,Abs. 1.)
Financing the course
The total cost of the course is to be covered by tuition fees paid by the participants.
Tuition Fees:
Approximately 4000 Euros (€). A non-refundable registration fee of €
370 is required.
Other fees:
Required student fees, official documents, books and materials, board and room,
an excursions among others. Cost run between € 440 and € 730 per month
according to individual standards.
Course credits:
European students may apply for credits through the European Credit Transfer
System. Students from abroad should make arrangements with their local universities
for graduate credits.
Housing information:
Will be distributed with the acceptance form along with information about payment
of fees.

Excursions
to schools in and around Salzburg and to places directly connected with the
life and works of Carl Orff are planned (his home and museum in Diessen am Ammersee,
The Orff Center Munich, events in Munich, Vienna and elsewhere). These excursions
are often (but not always) scheduled during February semester break and will
require extra fees for transportation and overnight accommodations.
Observation of Children's classes
at the Orff Institute and in schools nearby is highly recommended. About 300
children attend classes in music and dance weekly which are taught by faculty
and students enrolled in the 2 and 4 year courses.
A Student Centered Project Week of alternative, related studies.

Final Examinations and Structure
are held at the conclusion of each course of study in the winter or summer
semester as the case may be. Final examinations requiring a positive result
in the required courses are held at the end of the summer semester and include:
- a written thesis
- a colloquium
- practice teaching
- the performance of a study with original music and dance compositions
developed and directed by the candidate.
The examination will be monitored by a commission to be set up by the director
of the university course.
